Meloni’s FdI Proposes Ban on Full Veil in Public Places

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party announced on Wednesday that it is presenting legislation aimed at banning the use of the full veil in schools, universities, and other public places. The proposal is part of an “against separatism” bill introduced by FdI lawmakers at the Lower House.

According to Ansa News Agency, the bill, supported by Justice Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro, also includes new regulations on funding for mosques and proposes stricter penalties for those who coerce individuals into arranged marriages. FdI MP Sara Kelany emphasized the necessity of the measure to combat the formation of enclaves and counter-societies where Sharia law is practiced instead of the Italian legal system, and where Islamic fundamentalism is seen to thrive.
