Meloni Stipulates Disarmament of Hamas as Condition for Recognizing Palestine

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday reiterated that her government will not recognize the State of Palestine until Hamas is disarmed and has no role in governing Gaza. “Hamas must accept that it has no role in the transitional governance and in the future Palestinian state, and it must be disarmed, to prevent it from continuing to pose a threat to regional stability,” Meloni told the Senate as she reported to parliament before this week’s EU summit.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni emphasized that recent actions by Hamas illustrate its dangerous influence, even against Palestinians, with instances of summary executions deemed unacceptable by the Italian government. She highlighted that disarmament and exclusion of Hamas from governance are necessary preconditions for Italy’s recognition of Palestine, aligning with the stance of the Italian Parliament.

Meloni assured that the Italian government is prepared to act in recognition of Palestine once these conditions are fulfilled, stressing that Hamas’s activities prove it to be an adversary to the Palestinian people. This statement comes as Italy seeks to align its foreign policy with broader regional stability objectives.
