Meloni Stands Firm on Climate Law Revision Without Green Deal Overhaul

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni announced on Wednesday that her government will not endorse the European Commission’s proposed amendments to the EU Climate Law unless there is a significant restructuring of the Green Deal. This position was articulated as she addressed the Senate in anticipation of this week’s European Council meeting.

According to Ansa News Agency, the European Climate Law enshrines the EU’s ambition of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, with an interim objective of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% from 1990 levels by 2030. The European Commission has suggested an amendment to escalate this target to a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, relative to 1990 levels.

Meloni expressed that “Italy will not be able to support the proposed revision of the European climate law, especially if it is not supported by a real change of approach.” She reiterated Italy’s commitment to a robust emission reduction pathway but criticized what she described as an “ideological
, and therefore unreasonable, approach” that imposes unsustainable targets. Such targets, she warned, could undermine the credibility of the European Union.

The Premier has been a vocal critic of the Green Deal, particularly advocating for its suspension to alleviate pressures on the struggling automotive sector.
