Meloni Stands Firm on Anti-Mafia Measures Amid Bosses’ Complaints

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Monday asserted that her government is on the right track in its battle against the mafia, as evidenced by wiretapped conversations published by the Rome daily, La Repubblica. The recordings reportedly reveal criminal bosses expressing dissatisfaction with Meloni for not relaxing stringent measures such as life sentences without benefits and the 41 bis prison regime, which enforces near-total isolation for mafia bosses and other highly dangerous offenders.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni shared her reaction to the wiretaps on Facebook, stating, “I read the wiretaps published by La Repubblica in which some bosses attack me and the Italian Government for not easing hard prison for members of the mafia.” She described this as “further confirmation that we are on the right track.”

Meloni emphasized her government’s unwavering commitment to combating the mafia, declaring that the 41 bis regime and life sentences without benefits are essential tools in this fight. “Our commitment in the fight against the mafia is total,” she affirmed, adding, “No yielding until we will govern Italy.”

The 41 bis and life term without benefits policies were implemented in the early 1990s as a response to a surge in mafia-related violence, including attacks and bombings. Meloni’s steadfast approach signals her administration’s dedication to maintaining these measures as a fundamental part of Italy’s strategy against organized crime.
