Meloni Calls for Immediate Summit Between US, EU, and Allies Amid Rising Tensions

London: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Friday night called for an immediate summit between the United States, Europe, and its allies, emphasizing that any division within the West “makes us weaker” following a confrontation at the White House involving President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni’s statement was released ahead of Sunday’s summit on Ukraine in London. She asserted the necessity for a candid dialogue among the US, European states, and their allies to address current significant challenges, starting with the defense of Ukraine, which has been a shared effort in recent years. Meloni articulated Italy’s intention to propose this summit to its partners shortly.

Meloni highlighted that divisions within the Western bloc could weaken the collective strength and benefit those who wish to see the decline of Western civilization, particularly its founding principles like freedom. She stressed that no party would gain from such divisions. As part of
her diplomatic efforts, Meloni is scheduled to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday in London at 11 am (12 pm Italian time) at Downing Street. Following this, she will participate in a summit predominantly comprising European leaders on Ukraine at Lancaster House.

The bilateral meeting precedes discussions on common European defense and the security of Ukraine, hosted by Starmer with the participation of 14 other EU and non-EU leaders, along with Union and NATO heads. The British government officially confirmed the meeting in a note, highlighting two key face-to-face appointments before the broader summit: one with Meloni and another with Zelensky.

Zelensky’s visit follows a contentious encounter with Trump, who criticized him for alleged ingratitude and warned of potential repercussions for Ukraine if US support wanes in light of Russia’s aggression. Zelensky is expected to meet with Starmer later on Saturday after departing the White House without finalizing a minerals deal intended to bolst
er American backing.
