Meloni Arrives in Washington for Crucial Talks with Trump and Zelensky

Washington: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has arrived in Washington, where she is set to meet with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and other European leaders at the White House. The discussions are poised to address significant geopolitical issues, particularly focusing on Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.

According to Ansa News Agency, prior to her departure, Meloni emphasized the importance of Western unity and the necessity of ensuring Kyiv’s sovereignty in any agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This standpoint was reiterated during a video call involving the France, UK, and Germany-led Coalition of the Willing, which highlighted that no decisions regarding Ukraine’s future should be made without Kyiv’s involvement, and that solid security guarantees for Ukraine are essential.

The Italian government has been a strong advocate for a NATO-style “Article 5” mechanism, a proposal first introduced by Rome at a Coalition meeting in Paris. This mechanism is aimed at providing robust security assurances for Ukraine. Despite French President Emmanuel Macron’s reservations about the sufficiency of a theoretical article, Italian officials insist that it must be supported by a strong Ukrainian military.

Galeazzo Bignami, leader in the House of Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (FdI), expressed pride in the proposal, noting that international partners, including the United States, are converging on this idea. Meanwhile, Minister for EU Affairs Tommaso Foti has dismissed opposition criticism of the government’s stance following the Trump-Putin Alaska summit, asserting the importance of aligning with national interests.

Despite concerns about potential land swaps between Trump and Putin, Italian government sources stress the importance of securing Ukraine’s future protection. This is viewed as crucial not only for Kyiv but for the broader stability of Europe, a point Meloni has consistently underscored in her diplomatic engagements.
