Meloni Announces St Augustine Project with Algeria

Rome: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Wednesday that Italy is launching a joint project with Algiers to get places linked to Saint Augustine in the two countries UNESCO heritage status. “We want to celebrate the ties between Italy and Algeria with a project we both care a lot about – giving value to the places of St. Augustine’s life in Italy and Algeria, including with a joint UNESCO bid,” Meloni told a joint press conference with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the fifth Italian-Algerian intergovernmental summit.

According to Ansa News Agency, the initiative underscores the historical and cultural connections between Italy and Algeria, with a focus on honoring the legacy of St. Augustine. Meloni emphasized the project’s significance, noting its broader symbolic value, especially considering the presence of Pope Leo XIV, the first Augustinian pope, on the papal throne.
