Meloni and Macron Meet in Rome to Mend Italy-France Relations

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Rome to discuss improving relations between Italy and France. The talks aim to address recent tensions between the two nations, which are key members of the European Union and have a long-standing partnership bolstered by the 2021 Quirinal Treaty.

According to Ansa News Agency, the meeting comes after Meloni was notably absent from a recent gathering between Macron and other European leaders on Ukraine. This absence was due to Italy’s decision to refrain from participating in discussions about sending troops to Kyiv, a move that Macron compared to Russian disinformation. The leaders also differ on approaches to dealing with tariffs imposed by the United States, with Meloni advocating for compromise and Macron for firmer countermeasures.

The relationship between Italy and France has faced challenges, including disagreements over a migrant rescue boat incident in 2022 and differing views on the issue of abortion at the Group of Seven summit. Despite these differences, Macron has emphasized the importance of collaboration and called for the Rome meeting to move past these issues.
