Mattarella Expresses Solidarity with Kyiv on Third Anniversary of Russian Invasion

Rome: President Sergio Mattarella said on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine Monday that Italy was “close” to Kyiv “three years after the brutal aggression” by Moscow. “Three years after the brutal aggression of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, we must reiterate our closeness and solidarity with the courageous Ukrainian resistance in defense of its independence and the freedom of its national choices,” he said.

According to Ansa News Agency, President Mattarella emphasized the severity of the situation, noting the violation of basic international norms and the breaking of commitments made in 1994. He highlighted the significant human cost, including hundreds of thousands of victims, many of whom are civilians, and the deliberate destruction of Ukrainian infrastructure.

President Mattarella called for a rapid initiation of peace talks to achieve a just resolution consistent with UN principles. He stressed the necessity for effective security measures to ensure that any peace agreement is both lasting and definitive, thereby restoring stability and international order.
