Milan: Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel clinched victory in the season-opening spring classic, the Milan-Sanremo monument race, in an exhilarating display of skill and strategy. The 30-year-old rider emerged victorious in the one-day classic event, outpacing formidable competitors including Italy’s time trial specialist Filippo Ganna and Slovenian cycling icon Tadej Pogacar.

According to Ansa News Agency, Pogacar, a 26-year-old cyclist renowned for his impressive record, was a pre-race favorite, aiming to add the Sanremo victory to his illustrious list of achievements, which includes three Tour de France titles, one Giro d’Italia win, and numerous other prestigious monuments. In the lead-up to the decisive moments of the race, Pogacar and van der Poel had managed to distance themselves from Ganna. However, the 28-year-old Ganna, a record six-time pursuit champion, made a remarkable comeback to join the fray just in time for the final three-man sprint.

Pogacar’s exploits in the world of cycling are well-documented, having become only the third rider in history, after Eddy Merckx in 1974 and Stephen Roche in 1987, to achieve the Triple Crown of Cycling. This rare feat involves winning the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France, and the World Championships in the same year, underscoring his status as one of the sport’s greats. Despite his reputation and determination, it was van der Poel who ultimately took the spotlight in this year’s Milan-Sanremo, marking a significant victory in the Dutch cyclist’s career.
