Massive Gas Explosion at Rome Petrol Station Injures Over 40

Rome: A massive gas explosion at a petrol station in Rome has injured at least 40 people, including two who are in serious condition. The incident involved policemen, firemen, and other rescue workers who were responding to an initial smaller explosion after a truck struck a gas pipe.

According to Ansa News Agency, the second explosion was heard throughout the Italian capital, and a thick plume of smoke was visible from various parts of the city. The blast led to the hospitalization of at least 40 individuals, including local residents who sustained injuries from flying shards of broken windows.

A man was rescued from a burning car and is reported to be in serious condition, while one police officer also remains in serious condition, as stated by medical sources. Officials have assured that the other injured individuals are not facing life-threatening conditions.

Fabio Balzani, the manager of a nearby summer camp, remarked on the fortunate timing of the blast, which occurred early in the day, preventing a potential tragedy. He explained that the camp’s usual attendees, including 60 children and 120 swimming pool clients, had not yet arrived and were promptly evacuated when the gas leak was detected.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni is in close contact with Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri to monitor the situation. Pope Leo XIV has expressed his prayers for the victims. In response to the incident, Rome prosecutors have opened an investigation.

Approximately 50 people were evacuated after the larger explosion. Environmental group Legambiente has called for a reduction in the number of petrol and gas stations located within cities to enhance safety, particularly during the intense summer heat.

Lazio Regional Firefighters’ Chief Ennio Aquilino described the explosion as the result of a malfunction at the gas plant, noting that it resembled a bomb going off. Gregorio Assanti, a Carabiniere who rescued a petrol safety officer from a burning car, recounted the chaotic scene and the challenges faced by first responders in evacuating and aiding the injured.
