Massive Downpour Turns Ischia Streets Into Rivers

Ischia: A huge downpour turned streets on the Gulf of Naples island of Ischia into rivers on Tuesday, with roads made impassable and cars submerged in water. The extreme weather caused major inconvenience, with firefighters inundated with requests for help and several of the island’s local authorities telling people to avoid outdoor activities and unnecessary travel.

According to Ansa News Agency, Italy has been hit by a wave of violent storms that caused flooding and landslides in northern Italy on Monday. Emergency services on Tuesday resumed the searches for a woman, a foreign tourist, reported missing at Spigno Monferrato, near Alessandria, on Monday after torrential rain battered a campsite.

Scientists say the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, supercharged storms, and flooding more frequent and more intense. Although there are many sources of the greenhouse gases that are causing global heating, the main driver is the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal, sales of which generate huge profits for the world’s energy giants.
