Marina Berlusconi Warns Trump on Risk of “Demolishing” the West
Rome: US President Donald Trump risks becoming the “demolisher” of the West, and the European Union should engage in “self-criticism” if it is excluded from a solution to the conflict in Ukraine, said Marina Berlusconi, President of Fininvest and Mondadori. She made these remarks in an interview with the daily newspaper Il Foglio, published on Monday. Berlusconi, the eldest daughter of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, expressed concerns about the potential consequences of Trump’s policies on the international stage.
According to Ansa News Agency, Marina Berlusconi discussed the initial actions of the Trump administration, highlighting a recent phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump, as well as the tariffs imposed by the US. She noted that while some of Trump’s initiatives might offer short-term benefits to the United States, the long-term strategy of exerting pressure on other nations could create a divisive force within the western community.
Berlusconi expressed hope that the US would not have a leader who dismantles the legacy America has built over the past 80 years. She emphasized the importance of resolving the conflict in Ukraine, advocating for a solution that does not equate to Kyiv’s surrender or Moscow’s triumph. Berlusconi stressed that Ukraine’s security and independence must be guaranteed and warned that a peace agreement disadvantaging Kyiv and Europe would be unfavorable.
The discussion coincided with a meeting in Paris organized by French President Emmanuel Macron, which included Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and European leaders from Germany, the UK, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The meeting focused on European security and the situation in Ukraine, amid concerns over a potential deal between Trump and Putin that could compromise Kyiv and European interests.
Berlusconi also addressed issues related to Big Tech companies, highlighting concerns about unfair competition and the influence of algorithms on daily life. She spoke on Europe’s political landscape, emphasizing the importance of maintaining democratic values and the balance of sovereignty within the EU. Berlusconi advocated for unity in areas such as defense, foreign policy, and economic matters, stating that true sovereignty cannot be achieved in isolation.
