Man Arrested for Murdering Ex-Partner After Removing Electronic Tag

Rome: A man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his ex-partner in Castelnuovo del Garda, near Verona, after removing an electronic tag designed to keep him at a distance from her, as reported by local prosecutors. The suspect, identified as Reis Pedroso, a 41-year-old Brazilian national, had been previously ordered to wear the tag following an arrest in April for assaulting the woman.

According to Ansa News Agency, the victim, Jessica Stapazzolo Custodio de Lima, a 33-year-old also from Brazil, suffered an “unspecified, but enormous, number of stab wounds,” as detailed by the Verona prosecutors. Following the tragic incident, sources revealed that Pedroso called the Carabinieri police, expressing an intention to end his own life.

The case highlights a significant issue with gender-based violence in Italy. In July, the Italian Senate unanimously passed a bill that categorizes femicide as a distinct felony within the country’s criminal law framework. This legislation mandates life imprisonment for individuals who cause the death of a woman through acts of discrimination or hatred, or if the act is intended to suppress the woman’s rights, freedoms, or personality.

Furthermore, the bill introduces new conditions concerning prison incentives and privileges for those convicted of femicide, while also reinforcing the need for educational and awareness programs aimed at combating gender-based violence. The proposed legislation is currently awaiting final approval by the Lower House.
