Lithuanian Defence Minister Highlights Italy’s Role in Baltic Security
Vilnius: Lithuania’s Defence Minister, Dovile Sakaliene, emphasized the importance of Italy in the defence strategy of the Baltic region, describing the European nation’s contributions as crucial for the security of Europe’s north-eastern flank. This assertion was made during a bilateral meeting with Italian Deputy Defence Minister Isabella Rauti in Vilnius, which coincided with the deployment of the advanced Samp-T weapon system.
According to Ansa News Agency, Sakaliene expressed gratitude for Italy’s substantial role in the security of the Baltic region. She noted Italy’s consistent participation in the NATO Baltic air policing mission as a testament to its commitment to regional defence. Sakaliene voiced her hopes for continued and strengthened cooperation between the two countries in the future.
The meeting also included a visit by Rauti to the Italian contingent involved in the NATO air policing mission in the Baltic. Additionally, the Italian ambassador in Vilnius, Emanuele de Maigret, was part of the day’s engagements, highlighting the diplomatic and military ties between Italy and Lithuania.
