Leo XIV Calls for ‘Ceasefire Now’ in Gaza

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV called for a “ceasefire now!” in Gaza, along with the liberation of all the hostages held by Hamas and the full respect of humanitarian law, during his weekly general audience in Saint Peter’s Square on Wednesday.

According to Ansa News Agency, the American pontiff emphasized the dire situation by highlighting the cries of mothers and fathers in the Gaza Strip, who are desperately searching for safety and sustenance amidst ongoing bombardments. He described the heartrending scenes of parents clutching the lifeless bodies of their children, emphasizing the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire.

Leo XIV also extended his appeal for peace to Ukraine, noting the severe impact of recent attacks on civilians and infrastructure. He expressed his solidarity and prayers for all victims, especially children and families, affected by the conflict. The Pope stressed the importance of halting the war and supporting efforts towards dialogue and peace, urging the faithful to pray for peace in Ukraine and in all regions suffering from war.
