Last Week of August to Bring Intense Heat and Torrential Rains Across Italy

Rome: The last week of August in Italy is predicted to bring a mix of intense heat and heavy downpours.

According to Ansa News Agency, Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist and media director for iLMeteo.it, forecasts an African heatwave initially impacting the major islands and parts of the central and southern peninsula. Temperatures are expected to soar to 42°C (106°F), particularly in Sardinia’s Cagliari area, and will reach 41°C in Oristano. Sicily and Terni will experience peaks of 38°C and 37°C, respectively, while Rome will see temperatures around 35-36°C. The humidity levels will also be significant.

The forecast outlines severe weather conditions in the North, where a month’s worth of rain is anticipated to fall in a single day. From Thursday to Tuesday, the region will experience severe weather on several occasions. On Thursday, August 28, over 150 liters per square meter of rain are expected between Upper Piedmont and northwest Lombardy. The North and Tuscany will face heavy rains on Thursday, followed by a severe Atlantic low affecting the central and northern regions from Friday to Saturday. This weather pattern is linked to a former hurricane that traveled from the Caribbean to the British Isles.

Saturday will see the South hit by rain, with a brief respite expected between Sunday and Monday morning. Another round of rain is forecasted for the North, Tuscany, Umbria, and the Marche until Tuesday. The detailed weather conditions for the coming days highlight mostly sunny weather in the North and Center on Tuesday, with thunderstorms in the southern Apennines. By Wednesday, the North will experience worsening weather in the Alps, Prealps, and high plains, while the Center remains mostly sunny. The South will continue to be sunny and very hot.

Thursday will bring severe weather to the North with heavy rainfall, worsening conditions in Tuscany with showers, and continued heat across the Center and South. The outlook suggests worsening weather in the rest of the Center and parts of the South until Saturday, marked by rain and thunderstorms.
