Kean Withdraws from Italy Squad for World Cup Qualifiers Due to Injury
Rome: Fiorentina forward Moise Kean has withdrawn from Italy’s squad for their initial 2026 World Cup qualifiers after staining a muscle in his right thigh during training on Wednesday, delivering another setback to coach Luciano Spalletti.
According to Ansa News Agency, Spalletti’s options have been further constrained by several other absences. Notably, veteran Inter defender Francesco Acerbi declined his call-up to the Azzurri squad, creating a significant gap in the team’s defensive lineup. In response to these challenges, Spalletti called up Daniele Rugani to replace AC Milan centre back Matteo Gabbia, who also suffered a muscle injury during training on Tuesday.
Italy is set to commence their qualification campaign against Norway on Friday, followed by a match against Moldova on Monday in Reggio Emilia. The team is striving to adapt to these sudden changes and maintain their competitive edge as they seek a place in the 2026 World Cup.
