Judiciary Clarifies Role Amid Premier Meloni’s Claims

Rome: Italian magistrates union ANM responded to Premier Giorgia Meloni’s claim that some politicised magistrates were encroaching onto the political field and trying to hamper the government by saying that the judiciary does not oppose politicians but simply applies the law.

According to Ansa News Agency, ANM Chair Cesare Parodi stated, “There is no intention on the part of the associated judiciary to engage in political opposition, nor to hinder the exercise of the prerogatives and powers vested in the executive branch.” Parodi made these comments in response to Meloni’s remarks at the Rimini Meeting of the influential Catholic activist group Comunione e Liberazione in a keynote closing speech earlier in the day.

Parodi emphasized that the judiciary must consider the general regulatory framework, as required by their prerogatives. He further noted that recent decisions by the European Court confirm the correctness of this approach, which duly respects roles.
