Italy’s Retirement Age Projected to Reach Nearly 69 by 2050

Rome: Italy’s retirement age is set to rise to 68 years and 11 months by 2050, up from the current age of 67, Istat said in a recent report based on estimates from the State General Accounting Office (RGS).

According to Ansa News Agency, the retirement age is expected to increase due to life expectancy projections in the coming decades. The national statistics agency forecasts that the retirement age will hit the 70-year mark by 2067.

The report also anticipates an increase in workforce participation among older age groups. The percentage of individuals aged 55 to 64 who are active in the labor market is projected to rise from 61% last year to 70% by 2050. Additionally, the activity rate for those aged 65 to 74 is expected to grow from 11% in 2024 to 16% in 2050.

As a result of these trends, the overall activity rate for the 15-74 age group could reach 62% by 2050, compared to 58% in 2024.
