Udine: Italy’s national football coach, Luciano Spalletti, emphasized that Italy’s upcoming Nations League game against Israel in Udine is more than just a match; it’s a mission against war. The coach expressed hopes of influencing public opinion through the sport, particularly addressing those in Israel who are against the ongoing conflict.
According to Ansa News Agency, Spalletti, in a statement on Sunday, highlighted the unique position of sports in promoting peace and understanding. ‘You go to play the match with the hope of convincing someone,” he stated during an interview with Rai, Italy’s national public broadcasting company. He further added, ‘I think there are many Israelis who do not want the war and we must convince some others that this is something that must end.’
The Italian team, also known as the Azzurri, currently leads Nations League A, Group 2, with seven points from three games. Their recent performance includes a 2-2 draw with Belgium in Rome last Thursday. The match against Israel not
only plays a significant role in their campaign in the Nations League but also serves as a platform for Italy to express its stance on global issues, particularly war.
