ROME: In a recent telephone discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni emphasized the critical importance of protecting United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) personnel, her office reported. The conversation highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the safety of peacekeepers in the region.
According to Ansa News Agency, Premier Meloni reiterated the unacceptability of attacks on UNIFIL by Israeli forces. She reminded that the peacekeeping mission operates under a United Nations Security Council mandate aimed at contributing to regional stability. Meloni stressed the “absolute necessity” that the security of UNIFIL personnel be guaranteed at all times.
During the call, the Italian Premier also reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to the mission, expressing belief in the effectiveness of fully applying UN Security Council Resolution 1701. She asserted that this could significantly aid in stabilizing the Israeli-Lebanese border and ensure the safe return of all d
isplaced persons.
