Mestre: Italy’s first ‘SOS room’ for cats who need shelter and assistance because their owners can no longer care for them has opened in Forte Marghera near Venice. The space was inaugurated on Friday at a location owned by Venice’s chapter of the National Animal Protection Organization (ENPA), with the support of the local municipality, the Foundation Forte Marghera, and ENEL.
According to Ansa News Agency, the ‘SOS room’ is designed to temporarily host and assist cats while their owners are unable to care for them, due to illness or other difficulties. It also aims to raise awareness and educate citizens on animals’ rights, as stated by Italy’s oldest and largest animal welfare non-profit. The centre intends to provide the necessary care for cats in need, while also promoting good adoption practices by recommending selecting a pet from the local pound or animal shelter.
Additionally, the centre will focus on educating children to respect animals and provide families with useful information regarding legis
lation against abandoning pets. It will also inform them about the services available to support animal owners in the area.
