Italy Urged to Withdraw from Eurovision if Israel Participates

Rome: Italy should withdraw from next year’s Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is allowed to participate, according to three members of the Rai state broadcaster’s board. The directors are advocating for this move as a “concrete sign of sympathy with a population subject to extermination” in Gaza.

According to Ansa News Agency, Alessandro di Majo, Davide Di Pietro, and Roberto Natale, who are three of the seven directors at Rai, are urging Italy to follow the stance taken by countries like Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Slovenia, and Iceland. These countries have reportedly declared their intention not to take part in the contest if Israel is included, citing concerns over what they describe as “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.

The directors emphasized that Rai should consider the recent surge of solidarity for Palestine within Italy. This wave of support was highlighted by massive street demonstrations involving hundreds of thousands of people and was backed by numerous public service employees.

Five public broadcasters have already made the decision in recent weeks to withdraw from the contest should Israel participate. The Rai directors are calling for Italy to join this group, reflecting growing international tension surrounding the Eurovision Song Contest amid the ongoing conflict.
