Italy Reflects on Women’s Euros Semi-Final Heartbreak with Pride and Hope
London: Italy coach Andrea Soncin expressed a blend of pride and optimism following his team’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to reigning champions England after extra time in the Women’s Euros semi-finals on Tuesday.
According to Ansa News Agency, the Azzurre seemed destined for the final after Barbara Bonansea’s well-executed goal in the first half. However, the tide turned when teenage forward Michelle Agyemang came off the bench to level the score for England in the sixth minute of stoppage time. The match was ultimately decided when Chloe Kelly scored from a rebound after her penalty was saved in the 119th minute.
Soncin emphasized the pride his team should feel, stating, “The word that remains with us is pride. The girls should be proud of what they did, pushing the reigning champions should give us so much belief for the future.” He highlighted the emotional journey of his team and lamented the missed opportunity, particularly voicing concerns over the penalty decision that sealed their fate.
He also ackn
owledged the overwhelming support from Italy, noting, “We felt the support of the Italian people, both tonight and during our other matches. There have been many wonderful messages from Italy, which is another victory for the girls.” Despite the near miss, Soncin remains hopeful, albeit regretful, “It’s a shame as we were so close to our dream of playing in the final.”
