Italy Orienteering Athlete Dies in China Hospital

Chengdu: A 29-year-old Italian orienteering athlete died in a Chinese hospital Tuesday after falling critically ill in the opening race of the World Games at Chengdu last week, sources said. Mattia Debertolis, a 29-year-old from Trentino, was a civil engineer who worked in Stockholm.

According to Ansa News Agency, Debertolis was competing regularly last Friday when his GPS, a device all athletes carry, suddenly stopped transmitting, indicating he was stationary. This prompted immediate rescue operations.
