Italy Launches First Archaeological Mission in Qatar

Doha: Italy has embarked on its inaugural archaeological mission in Qatar, marking a significant milestone in cultural collaboration between the two nations. This announcement was made during the fourth edition of the Conference dedicated to combating illicit trafficking of Himaya cultural property, held in Doha from September 21 to 24. The event was inaugurated by H.E. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, the Minister of State and President of the Qatar National Library.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Italian Ambassador to Qatar, Paolo Toschi, revealed the launch of the archaeological mission during his opening remarks at the conference. The mission is backed by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and will focus on the Al Zubarah site, located north of Doha. This site is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

The mission will be led by Marco Ramazzotti, a professor of Near Eastern Archaeology and Art History at Rome’s “La Sapienza” University, starting next month. The project is set to benefit from the support of Qatar Museum, further strengthening the cultural ties between Italy and Qatar. The initiative underscores Italy’s established role in archaeology and its commitment to enhancing cultural heritage globally.
