Italy Faces Pressure to Ratify European Stability Mechanism Reform

Brussels: Many EU finance ministers at Monday’s Eurogroup meeting urged Italy to ratify the reform of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), as it remains the only country yet to do so, sources present told reporters. The ESM, a critical eurozone bailout fund, has been the subject of intense debate in Rome amid concerns over fiscal sovereignty.

According to Ansa News Agency, European Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis emphasized the significance of Italy’s ratification, highlighting the broader implications for the eurozone’s stability. Eurogroup President Paschal Donohue warned that Italy’s future financial risks would increase unless the ESM reform is ratified.

Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has stated that the Italian parliament is not considering ratification at the moment. The Italian government has expressed concerns about the reform’s potential impact on fiscal sovereignty and has suggested that the fund should be oriented towards fostering growth.

Italy’s reluctance to ratify the reform, despite mounting pressure from other EU members, underscores the contentious nature of the ESM reform in the country’s political landscape. The debate continues as Rome weighs its options in navigating this complex issue.
