Italy Experiences Monsoon Downpours in Centre-North While South Faces Intense Heat

Rome: Italy is witnessing monsoon-like downpours in the centre and north, coupled with ongoing heat in the south as the nation’s weather patterns increasingly resemble those of tropical climates, meteorologist Lorenzo Tedici reported.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tedici noted the growing intensity of downpours attributed to global warming. Severe weather continues to impact the Center-North, with southern temperatures soaring to 39°C. Tedici, who serves as a meteorologist and media manager for iLMeteo.it, highlighted the link between rising global temperatures and increased rainfall.

Tedici explained that higher temperatures lead to more evaporation from the sea, boosting water vapor levels in the atmosphere. For each degree of temperature increase, rainfall is estimated to rise by 8%. This phenomenon leads to “heat-induced downpours” in Italy. Since August 7, an anticyclone has caused temperatures to reach highs of 40-42°C, with lows of 33°C.

The intense heat has resulted in significant evaporation from water bodies, filling the atmosphere with humidity. The arrival of a low-pressure system has turned this humidity into rain. More thunderstorms are anticipated in North and Central Italy soon. The Northeast and central Tyrrhenian coasts are expected to experience severe weather.

In the southern regions, temperatures are predicted to climb further, nearing 39°C. Specific cities such as Catania, Barletta, and Cagliari will see peaks of 37°C, 36°C, and 35°C respectively. Additional showers, some severe, are forecasted from Friday, particularly in Tuscany and along the Adriatic coast.

The weekend will continue to see unstable weather, with increased likelihood of showers on Sunday in the North. The detailed forecast includes strong thunderstorms in the North and Center on Thursday, with hot and sunny conditions in the South except for showers in Campania. Unstable weather will prevail on Friday and Saturday, particularly affecting Triveneto, Adriatic Apennines, and regions such as Puglia and Basilicata. Sunday brings potential rainfall in the North with a general drop in temperatures.
