Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni’s cabinet has declared five days of national mourning following Pope Francis’s death on Monday, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said on Tuesday.
According to Ansa News Agency, the mourning period will run until Saturday, coinciding with the late pontiff’s funeral in St Peter’s Square. Musumeci also elaborated that the ceremonies organized for Italy’s Liberation Day national holiday on Friday will still proceed, albeit in “sobriety.”
Italy commemorates Liberation Day on April 25 each year, celebrating the nation’s liberation from Fascism and the Nazi occupation at the end of World War II.
