Italy Calls for Suspension of EU Green Deal Regulations Amid US Tariffs

Rome: Business and Made in Italy Minister Adolfo Urso announced on Tuesday that Italy will request the European Union to suspend certain Green Deal regulations, which he described as “crazy,” to support businesses following the imposition of hefty tariffs on imports to the United States by US President Donald Trump.

According to Ansa News Agency, Urso emphasized the need for the EU to unleash the creative potential of companies, which he believes is being suppressed by the current regulatory framework. Addressing attendees at the Milan Salone del Mobile furniture fair, Urso stated, “We will ask the EU for a shock measure to suspend some of the crazy rules of the ‘Green Deal,’ which has condemned the business system to decay.”

Premier Giorgia Meloni has also expressed a desire to suspend the Green Deal measures, particularly those related to the auto sector. The European Green Deal is a series of initiatives aimed at achieving climate neutrality within the EU by 2050, in response to the ecological crisis and global warming caused by human-generated greenhouse gas emissions.

Speculation is mounting that Meloni might travel to Washington to meet with Trump, with whom she maintains amicable relations, to potentially act as an intermediary between the US administration and Brussels. Urso indicated that Italy intends to present its proposals, including possible bilateral agreements, emphasizing the importance of avoiding an escalation of tariffs and retaliatory measures, which could disproportionately affect Europe.

Urso concluded by stressing the need for a zero-duty system between the US and Europe to foster unity in the West, particularly in light of current global competitive challenges.
