Italy Braces for Major Disruptions as Transport Workers Announce ‘Black Friday’ Strike

Rome: January 10 is set to mark the first ‘Black Friday’ for a rail and local transport strike across Italy, initiated by grass-roots unions. The strike will see ‘Autonomous’ union workers walking off their jobs from nine pm Thursday to the same time Friday, as they protest against pay and conditions.

According to Ansa News Agency, last year witnessed a record number of strikes, with 622 stoppages, many of which were transport strikes occurring on Fridays. This trend highlights the ongoing discontent among workers in the transport sector.

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, who also serves as deputy premier, has been active in issuing several back-to-work orders aimed at limiting the duration of strike actions. Despite these efforts, Friday’s strike is anticipated to cause significant disruption to services, leading to inconvenience for commuters throughout Italy. The planned strike underscores the continued tension between union workers and the government over issues of pay and working conditions.
