Italian Parliamentary Delegation Strengthens Ties with Singapore During Official Visit
Tunis: An Italian parliamentary delegation led by MP Ciro Maschio, President of the Bilateral Section of the Italy-South East Asia Inter-Parliamentary Union, visited Singapore on 20 and 21 June. The delegation included Senator Luigi Nave and MPs Salvatore Caiata and Gerolamo Cangiano. This mission marked one of the first official parliamentary visits to Singapore following the general elections on 3 May 2025, as the city-state anticipates the inauguration of its new Parliament.
According to Ansa News Agency, the visit was part of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Singapore. During their stay, the delegation, with the assistance of Ambassador Dante Brandi and Deputy Head of Mission Fabio Conte, toured the Parliament of Singapore. The tour was led by MP Stephen Quick, Head of Inter-Parliamentary Relations, culminating in a meeting with Singaporean MPs Sharael Taha and Rachel Ong. The meeting facilitated a comprehensive exchange of views aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two legislative bodies.
The Italian representatives also engaged with Temasek, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, discussing mutual investment interests and potential synergies in sectors like energy transition, advanced manufacturing, fashion, and design. The mission included a meeting with the Italian community in Singapore, represented by entities such as Comites, the Chamber of Commerce, and the scientific and academic community. Additionally, the delegation visited Silicon Box, a Singaporean leader in advanced semiconductor packaging, which plans to open a new industrial plant in Italy.
Ciro Maschio emphasized the significance of fostering inter-parliamentary dialogue with South-East Asia, highlighting Singapore as a strategic partner for Italy. He pointed out the potential for structured cooperation in various fields, underscoring shared values and economic complementarity as the foundation for future developments.
