Italian Gymnast Bonicelli in Coma After Fall at Uni Games

Essen: Italian gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli was in an induced coma on Friday after he suffered a fall from the rings while competing at the Summer World University Games in Essen, Germany. The 23-year-old athlete from Lecco experienced this accident during one of the events held at the games, leading to immediate medical intervention.

According to Ansa News Agency, Bonicelli was swiftly taken to a hospital following the incident, where he underwent surgery on his neck. The severity of his condition prompted doctors to place him in an induced coma as part of his treatment.

In light of the unfortunate event, Italy made the decision to withdraw its athletes from the remainder of the competition. The decision was made considering the “understandable emotional involvement of the rest of the team,” as the incident had deeply affected Bonicelli’s teammates and the Italian delegation present at the games.
