Italian Families Show Cautious Optimism Amid Economic Uncertainty
Rome: Retail and hospitality-sector association Confcommercio has revealed that Italian families have begun to increase their spending while maintaining a cautious approach due to ongoing economic uncertainties, as outlined in a report compiled with research institute Censis.
According to Ansa News Agency, the report indicates that the Italian economy is demonstrating signs of stability, with strong fundamentals. However, it highlights a contradiction among Italian families, who are torn between a desire to return to normal spending habits and a cautious approach due to prevailing uncertainties.
The report notes a 10.9% increase in the number of households intending to purchase electrical appliances compared to 2024, along with a 9.1% rise in those planning to acquire technological products. Additionally, 37.7% of Italians have already planned their summer holidays, marking the highest level since 2019. Despite challenges, 46.5% of Italians remain optimistic.
The study suggests that if there are no further
external shocks, real consumer spending in Italy could rise by 1% this year and in 2026. Confcommercio President Carlo Sangalli emphasized that Italian families are displaying resilience, with growing purchasing intentions and nearly 40% having planned their summer holidays, the best figure since 2019. Sangalli advocates for tax cuts as a means to rebuild confidence and boost consumer spending and investment.
