Italian Exports to US Surge by 34.4% in September, Imports Jump 76.8%
Rome: Italian exports to the United States increased by 34.4% in September in year-on-year terms, while imports from the US surged by 76.8% compared to the same month last year, according to preliminary data released by Istat.
According to Ansa News Agency, in August, when US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on EU goods were implemented, exports to the United States dropped by 21.1% compared to the same month in 2024. The national statistics agency reported that in September 2025, exports to non-EU27 countries as a whole rose by 9.9%, with imports increasing by 16.9% in comparison with the same month of the previous year.
Exports to OPEC countries rose by 23.8%, with additional increases of 15.6% and 10% in exports to Japan and Switzerland, respectively. There was, however, a significant year-on-year decrease in exports to Turkey, which fell by 33.9%. Imports from China and India showed increases of 32.3% and 28.6%, respectively.
Italy recorded a trade surplus of 2.738 billion euros with non-EU countries in September, down from a surplus of 3.753 billion euros in September 2024. Excluding energy, the surplus was 6.177 billion euros, a decrease from a 7.679-billion-euro surplus in September 2024.
