Inmate Suicide at Cremona Prison Marks 14th Incident in Italian Facilities This Year

Cremona: An inmate was found hanged in his cell at Cremona Prison on Monday morning, marking the 14th prison suicide in Italy this year, as reported by the UILPA warders’ union.

According to Ansa News Agency, a prison operator has also died by suicide this year. The increasing number of suicides has been associated with chronic overcrowding and inadequate conditions within the prison system.

Gennarino De Fazio, the general secretary of the UILPA Penitentiary Police union, remarked, “We are clearly facing a carnage to which, in fact, no effective barrier has been put in place and which bears witness even more, if there were any need, to the dramatic nature of the penitentiary emergency.”
