Hungarian Official Commemorates 1956 Revolution as a Milestone of National Freedom

BUDAPEST: During a commemorative event for the anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 revolution and freedom struggle, Bence Rétvári, a member of parliament for the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) and state secretary, emphasized the enduring significance of the revolution in achieving Hungary’s freedom and independence. He highlighted that the essential objectives of Hungary’s national uprisings have been realized over time, while the goals of those who opposed them have not.

According to KDNP, Rétvári remarked that the aspirations for greater independence and freedom, pursued by Hungarians during their national uprisings, were fulfilled within a generation or two. He described October 23, 1956, as one of the “birthdays of Hungarian freedom,” noting that the country’s freedom has been challenged from various directions but consistently defended and reclaimed. Rétvári likened these commemorative days to family birthdays and holidays, signifying their importance in Hungary’s national consciousness.
