Hungarian Official Calls for Preservation of National Identity and Sovereignty

BUDAPEST: Veronika Varga-Bajusz has called for the preservation of Hungary’s national identity and sovereignty, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong community of sovereign nations within Europe. She highlighted the historical significance of the 1956 uprising as a pivotal moment when Hungarians sought to decide their own fate.

According to KDNP, Varga-Bajusz addressed an audience of young people, reflecting on the 1956 revolution as a unique global event led by the youth. She noted that the young generation of that time shared similar aspirations with today’s youth, such as the desire to learn, live, and prosper. She warned against external influences dictating how Hungarians should live, referencing a “misconstrued United States of Europe” attempting to control areas like higher education, migration, and family issues, which she argued should remain under national jurisdiction.

Varga-Bajusz praised the heroes of the 1956 revolution for unleashing a spirit of freedom that paved the way for a d
emocratic Hungary proud of its heritage. She also addressed young people organized by the Rákóczi Association, emphasizing that retaining the Hungarian identity, alongside education, could be crucial for the nation’s future.
