Hungarian Defense Minister Highlights National Sovereignty at 1956 Revolution Ceremony

BUDAPEST: Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasized Hungary’s enduring commitment to freedom since the 1956 revolution during a ceremony at the Balna Centre of Military Culture. Addressing attendees, the minister underscored the importance of national sovereignty and the nation’s vigilance against foreign intervention.

According to About Hungary, Szalay-Bobrovniczky remarked on the significance of the 1956 heroes who fought for national sovereignty, stressing that vigilance remains crucial against those who might compromise Hungary’s independence for foreign interests. He cautioned that current times of peace in Hungary feel “fragile” and warned of the potential for European countries to become entangled in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He claimed that a nation that neglects its sovereignty risks becoming a puppet of external powers.

The minister praised the Hungarian Armed Forces, citing their accomplishments, including the successful Adaptive Hussars exercise. He highlighted the benefits
of a “simplified legislative environment” that allows the military to adapt swiftly to global changes. Szalay-Bobrovniczky also mentioned new weaponry and equipment being introduced and noted the 2,600 individuals who have joined the volunteer territorial reserves. Additionally, he referenced the cadet programme, which provides high-school students at 155 partner schools with an education in national defense.

During the event, Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky presented appointments, promotions, and awards, with Chief of General Staff Gábor Böröndi in attendance.
