Greece Court Approves Extradition of American Accused in Villa Pamphili Murders

Larissa: A Greek appeals court has given the green light for the extradition of Francis Kaufmann, a 46-year-old American, to Italy. Kaufmann is accused of murdering his 28-year-old Russian girlfriend, Anastasia Trofimova, and their 11-month-old baby, Andromeda, in Rome’s Villa Pamphili park earlier this month.

According to Ansa News Agency, Kaufmann, who appeared via video link from a Greek courtroom in Larissa, maintains his innocence, claiming, “I am innocent: I didn’t kill them.” He expressed a desire to speak to his lawyer and the American consulate. Although the extradition has been approved, Kaufmann has the option to appeal the decision, which could delay his transfer to Italy.

The killings have been under intense scrutiny by Italian authorities, with investigations led by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office and coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini. The investigation revealed that the infant, Andromeda, died of strangulation on June 6, while her mother, Anastasia, was found dead a few days earlier. The exact cause of Anastasia’s death remains unclear as investigators await the results of a histological examination.

Kaufmann, Trofimova, and their daughter reportedly lived in Villa Pamphili, utilizing makeshift beds and facilities around the San Silverio market area. Kaufmann’s behavior has been described as evasive and provocative by investigative sources, and he has consistently refused to cooperate with authorities. He was arrested in Skiathos, Greece, and is currently detained in Larissa, awaiting the final decision on his extradition.

In an unusual twist, Kaufmann was found using the alias Rexal Ford when he was stopped by authorities in Rome. After the murders, he allegedly attempted to erase evidence, including disposing of the girl’s clothing. The Italian Flying Squad continues to examine Kaufmann’s financial activities to determine the extent of his stay in Villa Pamphili.
