Grave Phenomenon of Prison Overcrowding Says Mattarella


Rome: President Sergio Mattarella on Tuesday highlighted the challenges faced by Italy’s penitentiary police due to the increasing issue of prison overcrowding. He emphasized that the police are confronted with numerous difficult situations daily as a consequence of this ongoing problem.



According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella addressed the issue in a message marking the 280th anniversary of the foundation of the penitentiary police corps. He stated that the penitentiary police are regularly dealing with situations of tension and suffering, exacerbated by the persistent overcrowding in prisons.



Mattarella also praised the penitentiary police corps for their professional level and commitment to service. He acknowledged their crucial role in upholding the constitutional principle that aims to re-educate detainees, facilitating their potential reintegration into society despite the challenging conditions within the prison system.
