Giorgetti Praises ISTAT Data Highlighting Italy’s Economic Performance Amidst Challenges

Rome: Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti expressed satisfaction with the recent economic figures published by the national statistics agency ISTAT, which indicated that Italy’s financial condition is more robust than previously anticipated.

According to Ansa News Agency, Giorgetti emphasized the importance of the primary surplus reported by ISTAT, describing it as a “moral satisfaction.” He noted that the growth figures align with the government’s updated projections from December, providing a sense of reassurance and satisfaction. However, Giorgetti acknowledged the ongoing challenges, stating that the priority remains to achieve growth within a challenging European context.

ISTAT revealed that Italy’s GDP increased by 0.7% last year, which was slightly below the government’s Budgetary Structural Plan (BSP) estimate of 1%. The agency also reported Italy’s GDP at market prices as 2,192,182 million euros in 2024. Additionally, the deficit-to-GDP ratio improved to 3.4% last year from 7.2% in 2023, outperforming the BSP forecast of 3.8%.

The statistics further highlighted an increase in Italy’s tax burden by 1.2 percentage points in 2024, reaching 42.6% of GDP, compared to 41.4% in 2023, according to ISTAT.
