Rome: Sunday’s Immacolata Holiday, when the Roman Catholic Church marks the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, will be hit by high winds, heavy rain, and snow even at low altitudes, weathermen said Wednesday.
According to Ansa News Agency, a cold mass of air originating from the North Pole is expected to move across Europe and dive into the Mediterranean Sea, impacting Italy significantly. Antonio Sanò, founder of the site www.iLMeteo.it, highlighted that the Adriatic slopes and the southern regions will be the most affected, with Thursday anticipated as the rainiest day. In these areas, heavy rain and potential snowfall at elevations between 900-1200 meters are expected.
Colder winds will begin blowing from northern and northeastern directions, causing a temperature drop in Northern Italy by Thursday. On Saturday, December 7, the cold air will press against the Alps, entering the Mediterranean through the Rhone Valley and the Porta della Bora. This will result in worsening weather conditions in the
North, with snow likely on the Alps, Prealps, and possibly flat areas of Piedmont, Lombardy, upper Veneto, and upper Friuli by nightfall.
The forecast for Sunday, December 8, includes strong Mistral and Libeccio winds with gusts exceeding 90 km/h, leading to storm surges particularly between Liguria and Tuscany, as well as on the Tyrrhenian coasts and in Sardinia. While Northern Italy may see improving weather, Tuscany, Lazio, Umbria, Campania, Sardinia, and Sicily will experience severe weather, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and widespread snow on the Apennines. The climate is expected to cool further into the following week.
