Rome: Tommaso Foti was sworn in as minister for European affairs, the South, cohesion, and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) on Monday before President Sergio Mattarella. Foti, 64, previously served as the Brothers of Italy (FdI) House whip under Premier Giorgia Meloni. He takes over from Raffaele Fitto, who resigned on Saturday to become an executive vice president of the European Commission, focusing on cohesion and the NRRP.
According to Ansa News Agency, President Mattarella had earlier met with Premier Meloni at the Quirinale palace, where he signed the decree accepting Fitto’s resignation and officially appointed Foti to the ministerial post. The swearing-in ceremony included the presence of Premier Meloni and Cabinet Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, among other dignitaries.
Premier Meloni expressed her confidence in Foti’s capabilities following the ceremony. She described him as a politician with significant experience and one of the Brothers of Italy’s best resources. Meloni highlig
hted Foti’s extensive parliamentary career and his proven expertise during the current legislature as the main party’s whip in the Lower House.
With Foti’s new appointment, Galeazzo Bignami, who currently serves as the deputy infrastructure and transport minister, will succeed him as the Brothers of Italy’s whip in the House.
