Bratislava: Slovakia has clarified its stance on minority rights, confirming there are no plans to impose any restrictions. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, emphasized that the deputy speaker of the Slovak National Council assured the governing coalition’s commitment to maintaining these rights, particularly in light of the planned amendment to Slovakia’s language law.
According to About Hungary, Minister Szijjártó shared on Facebook his discussions with Andrej Danko, whom he described as a “good friend of Hungary.” Szijjártó highlighted the importance of such alliances, noting the challenges posed by opponents of Slovak-Hungarian cooperation, particularly within EU platforms where such collaborations are often viewed unfavorably by the liberal mainstream.
Minister Szijjártó further conveyed Danko’s reassurances that Slovakia’s majority coalition has no intention of curbing the rights of minorities. This includes safeguarding the Hungarian minority’s right to use their mother tongue i
n southern Slovakia. Szijjártó expressed confidence in these commitments and requested Danko to monitor the legislative process to ensure these assurances are upheld.
