Family Minister Faces Backlash Over Remarks on Auschwitz School Trips

Rome: Family Minister Eugenia Roccella finds herself embroiled in controversy following remarks suggesting that school trips to Auschwitz were organized to connect anti-Semitism with Fascism.

According to Ansa News Agency, Roccella affiliated with Premier Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, stated that these educational visits aimed to portray anti-Semitism as a historical issue associated with the Fascist era.

Roccella’s comments have incited strong reactions, notably from Holocaust survivor and Life Senator Liliana Segre, as well as various opposition parties. In response, Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party (PD), urged Premier Meloni to distance herself from what she described as an “unspeakable statement.”

Roccella has since clarified that her comments were misunderstood and expressed her willingness to address the parliamentary commission for combating intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism, and instigation to hatred and violence. This commission, established by Segre, aims to provide a platform for Roccella to explain her position on the matter.
