EU Urged to Strengthen Economic Model Amid Tariff Challenges

Brussels: The EU must bolster its economic and business model to counteract the impact of distorting tariffs, according to the president of Italy’s antitrust authority, Roberto Rustichelli. In his annual report presented on Tuesday, Rustichelli emphasized the need for strategic enhancement of the European Union’s framework to mitigate the adverse effects of current trade dynamics.

According to Ansa News Agency, Rustichelli highlighted that the international trade system, traditionally grounded in productive integration and free trade, is currently disrupted by a pervasive network of tariffs and non-tariff measures. These developments, he noted, are significantly distorting competitive comparisons between companies and countries, necessitating a robust response from the EU.

Rustichelli pointed out that the European economy, with its inherent focus on international trade and integration within global production chains, is particularly susceptible to market fluctuations and new protectionist measures. He stressed that in this context of strained trade relations, the EU’s growth prospects are increasingly tied to strengthening its development model. This approach aims to enhance the single market, reduce structural vulnerabilities, and lessen dependence on external factors, thereby bridging productivity and innovation gaps compared to other economies.

Furthermore, Rustichelli advocated for increased competition as a means to foster growth and improve workers’ rights, underscoring the necessity of a dynamic and resilient European economic model in the face of evolving global trade challenges.
