EU to Unveil New Wine Sector Support Measures

Brussels: The European Commission is set to introduce a package of targeted measures to bolster the wine sector, as announced by European Commissioner for Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, during the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting in Brussels. These measures are scheduled to be presented on Friday, March 28, and are based on recommendations from the High-Level Dialogue with industry stakeholders, which concluded in December.

According to Ansa News Agency, Commissioner Hansen confirmed that the forthcoming support measures will allow wine producers greater flexibility and efficiency in managing their production. He emphasized the significance of the wine sector, noting its vital role in the rural economy, cultural landscapes, and traditions across Europe. The EU leads the world in wine production, contributing to 60% of the global output. Nevertheless, the sector is currently grappling with challenges such as shifting consumption patterns, climate change, export instability, and geopolitical tensions.

Hansen highlighted that the proposed measures are designed to help the wine industry adapt to these evolving challenges while also capitalizing on new opportunities. In addition to the support for the wine sector, Hansen mentioned upcoming developments on the EU agricultural agenda, including a simplification package related to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), anticipated by late April or early May.
