Barcelona: The structure and institutions of the European Union are too slow to cope with the challenges the bloc faces, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said Tuesday. Speaking via video link at the XX Spain-Italy Dialogue Forum, which is currently underway in Barcelona, Giorgetti stressed the urgent need for the EU to accelerate its integration or risk facing decline.
According to Ansa News Agency, Giorgetti highlighted the implications of both the Draghi and Letta reports, emphasizing that the current EU structure is not conducive to the swift political decision-making required in today’s international landscape. He pointed out the ecological transition and the increasing commitments in the security and defense sectors as areas where the EU’s sluggishness is particularly problematic.
Giorgetti also cited the complexity of the process of selecting and approving commissioners as an example of the bureaucratic hurdles faced by member states like Italy and Spain. He compared this slow-moving process to th
e rapid pace of decision-making observed in Asia and North America, suggesting that the EU must streamline its processes to remain competitive on the global stage.
